When to Buy a Wearable: The Best Months, and the Worst

Wearables run on the tightest launch cycle in this series. New watches launch in September at full price, and the first real discounts now arrive within weeks, at Amazon's October event and Black Friday. That makes launch week the worst time to buy a current model and the following six to ten weeks among the best. This guide shows the dated evidence we have, and labels the rest as mechanism.

How we define a deal: cheaper than it was a month ago and below its recent average is a valid deal for that date; a deal does not need to be the lowest price in history. We always disclose the lowest price we have seen and when it happened, and we never judge a discount against a launch price or a retailer's "was" price.

How solid is the evidence? Two products with price history records out of three wearables we track, below our three product bar for calling something a measured pattern, so treat this guide as early evidence plus mechanism. CamelCamelCamel verification for this category is still pending.

September is marked Good for one specific reason: it is when the outgoing model gets cleared as the new one launches. The new model itself is at full price that month, which the worst time section below covers.

The evidence: three wearables, three dated prices

Best windows: October and Black Friday

For Apple Watch, the October Prime event and Black Friday, based on the dates above. The mechanism is launch timing: new watches launch in September at full price, and the first discounts now arrive fast. Garmin discounts cluster around sale events and around new model launches, when the outgoing watch gets cleared (mechanism-based advice). The Oura Ring's tracked low landed on Black Friday, so November is its window in our records.

Second best: September, for the outgoing model

When the new watch launches in September, last year's model is still on shelves and gets cleared. It is the same hardware that was full price a month earlier. If you do not need the newest model, September clearance on the outgoing watch rivals the October and November discounts on the new one.

Worst time: launch week

The Apple Watch Series 12 dropped from $389.99 on September 16, 2026 to $349.99 by October 5, 2026. Buying in launch week cost $40 for three weeks of ownership. New wearables are for people who value new over price.

FAQ

How soon after launch do Apple Watch discounts start? Fast, in the current cycle. The Series 12 launched in September 2026 at $389.99 in our records and hit $349.99 on October 5, 2026, within weeks, at Amazon's October Prime event window. Waiting a month past launch is now the default advice.

When do Garmin watches go on sale? Around sale events and new model launches. Our Venu 4 record shows a lowest of $489.99 on September 16, 2026 against a $533.31 average, but with two products of history data in this category we label the broader Garmin pattern as mechanism-based advice, not a measured pattern.

Does the Oura Ring go on sale? In our tracker, yes, once: $249 on Black Friday, November 28, 2025, against $349 in October 2026. One data point is not a pattern, but November is the month to check.

Should I buy last year's watch when the new one launches? Usually yes. The outgoing model gets cleared in September while it is still current enough for years of use, and the discount arrives without waiting for the new model's first sale.

When to buy other things

Timing differs by category, and each of these guides uses the same deal definition and the same price database: when to buy a TV, when to buy headphones and speakers, when to buy a vacuum, when to buy kitchen and coffee gear, when to buy a laptop or tablet, and when to buy toys. For picks, our Black Friday wearable deals guide tracks Apple Watch, Garmin, and Oura prices in season. Timing gets you to the right month; that page tells you whether this month's price is actually a deal.
