When to Buy Headphones and Speakers: The Best Months, and the Worst (2026)

When to Buy Headphones and Speakers: The Best Months, and the Worst
Audio gear follows two clocks at once. The first is the sale calendar: headphones and earbuds are gift products, so November and Amazon's event months do the heavy discounting. The second is the model replacement cycle: when a new flagship launches, the previous generation gets cheaper and stays cheaper, in whatever month that happens to be. This guide lays out both, from the prices our tracker has recorded.
How we define a deal: cheaper than it was a month ago and below its recent average is a valid deal for that date; a deal does not need to be the lowest price in history. We always disclose the lowest price we have seen and when it happened, and we never judge a discount against a launch price or a retailer's "was" price.
How solid is the evidence? Stated plainly: this category currently has zero products with full lowest-ever history records in our database, and CamelCamelCamel verification is pending. What follows combines our tracker's recorded prices with the mechanisms that move audio prices, labeled as such.

The evidence: tracked lows landed on Black Friday
The lowest prices our tracker has recorded for four headphone models all landed on Black Friday, November 28, 2025. The Sony WH-1000XM5 was $248, the Sony WH-1000XM4 was $199.99, the Bose QuietComfort Headphones were $199, and the Apple AirPods 4 with ANC were $99. The exception is the AirPods Pro 3: its lowest tracked price so far is $199, recorded September 25, 2026, below the $219 we recorded on Black Friday 2025. That is one product, not a pattern, but it shows Black Friday is not a guaranteed floor for Apple gear.
Best window: Black Friday, then the Amazon event months
Black Friday first, Prime Day in July second, with Amazon's October event close behind (mechanism-based advice, consistent with the dates above). Audio is a gift category, so retailers discount it hard in November, and Amazon discounts its own and Apple's earbuds aggressively during its July and October events.
The other lever: model replacement
When a new flagship launches, the previous generation gets cheaper and stays cheaper. Our tracker recorded the Sony WH-1000XM6 at $398 on November 28, 2025 and at $248 by August 9, 2026, as the model aged. Buying the outgoing model right after its replacement launches is one of the most reliable discounts in audio, and it can happen in any month.
Speakers: thinner data, clearer rules
We have single tracked prices for the Sonos Era 100 ($219, August 28, 2026) and the Sonos Era 300 ($479, August 23, 2026), and the Echo Dot Max at $49.99 on June 3, 2026, which is not enough to name a best month from our own records. The mechanism advice: Sonos discounts rarely and mostly around Black Friday and its own occasional sales, while Amazon's Echo devices are discounted at nearly every Amazon event, so for Echo gear the rule is simply never pay list price.
Worst time: a flagship's launch month
A headphone flagship is at its most expensive in its launch month, at full list price, often with last year's model discounted right beside it. If a launch just happened and you do not need the newest model, the outgoing one is the buy.
FAQ
Is Black Friday the best time to buy headphones? In our tracked records, yes for most models: the lowest prices we have seen for the Sony XM5 and XM4, Bose QuietComfort, and AirPods 4 ANC all landed on Black Friday 2025. The AirPods Pro 3 is the exception so far, cheaper in September 2026 than it was the previous November.
When do AirPods go on sale? At Amazon's events: Black Friday, Prime Day in July, and the October Prime event. Apple's own price barely moves, so the discounts come from retailers on event days.
Should I buy the outgoing model when a new one launches? Usually yes. Replacement is the most reliable non-event discount in audio: the previous flagship keeps most of the performance and drops in price the moment its successor ships, and our XM6 tracking shows the price keeps sliding as the model ages.
Do Sonos speakers ever go on sale? Rarely, and mostly around Black Friday and Sonos's own occasional sales. Our tracked prices are single snapshots, not enough to name a pattern, so the practical rule is to wait for Black Friday unless a Sonos sale event is running.
When to buy other things
Timing differs by category, and each of these guides uses the same deal definition and the same price database: when to buy a TV, when to buy a vacuum, when to buy kitchen and coffee gear, when to buy a laptop or tablet, when to buy a wearable, and when to buy toys. For picks, our noise cancelling headphones guide carries a deal or not a deal yet header in Black Friday season, and the smart speaker guide covers the speaker picks. Timing gets you to the right month; those pages tell you whether this month's price is actually a deal.
